May 2010

.Mai 1st

Sun and clouds, 10 - 18 °C.

.
We are 8 this May 1st!

Yesterday April 30 at 2:48 p.m. our little brother (or sister) number eight (the eighth egg, seven chicks) was born.

.Look at the egg at top that begins to split.

Watch VIDEO   (3632ko, 3mn 11s)

There was one egg left in the nest then.

.

On April 29th No. 6 hatched at 16h38.    Watch VIDEO   (758ko, 1mn 28s)

Under the shell of the new-born under his hat. This time mom feel that she has eaten enough of shells and she takes it out and dump it a little further.
In these videos I cut the long sequence where mom is trying to tear the shell.

.

April 30th 7:00 am, parents left to find supplies and No. 7 arrives and in fact, it does well alone. It will stay with his little hat until mom has a little time to take care of him.

That's what she will do after cleaning, collection of the fecal sac of a chick. She still consumes the bag that day. Dad always takes the bag out and throws it far from the nest. She then consumes the shell.

Watch VIDEO   (1576ko, 2mn 43s)

.

A recording incident and I missed the birth of the eighth chick (9th egg) which happened between noon and 2 pm. So, no video for him.

It's hard to count on the photo. But they are well eight at 2 pm this May 1st.

Mai 2nd

Hazy and rainy, cool, 12 °C.

The chicks change fast. They are well fed, hunting is good, regular feedings, parents still find many caterpillars and spiders.

.

.

April 29th
They are still sprawled without too much movement, they struggle to raise the head.

.

.

.

.
April 30

The little beaks are more visible and the large eyes darker.

.

.

May 1st.

Bouquet of beaks (instead of Lily of the valley (muguet)) for May 1st.
They turn up for mom to do the cleaning.

.
May 2nd.

No. 8 has more than two days of lag compared to the first born and it shows up.
A tiny beak and besides, large ovens. They change very quickly the first few days.
They could almost be classified by size of the beak!

.

.We can see the darker spine.

Eat!
Dad in the foreground, at the beginning, is all delicacy and patience.

May 3rd

Clouds, rain, cold, 8°C in the afternoon!

.
Very few goings out for mom, it's really cold and she remains to clutch their young.

Dad provides supplies.

.

...

...

..

Eat, still eat ...

They become darker.

..It's tough when you're the littlest, it's hard to stay in the middle of all these big ones but happily it gets feed.

It is still very pink compared to others.

.

You'll have still a little something?

..

May 4th

Clouds, sunny spells and always strong North-East wind. 10 °C, it's more a March month than a May month!

...

..In the box, the feedings routine continues.

In the morning she seldom goes out, and broods the chicks ... they have nothing to keep warm.

.This is not because you must work and look for supplies that you are not entitled to take care over yours appearance!

These lowered wings are those of dad.

.To report that he brings a meal, he always waves so the wings. She takes also the same attitude to beg her beakful.
Sometimes he enters and gives the prey to mom which shares it between the chicks. Sometimes he also feeds the chicks at the same time.

More often now, he calls for her to join him.

.

Supplies given, he goes out a flower behind the ear...

Watch VIDEO   (4476ko, 24s)

.

Sometimes, dad does cleaning chores and takes out the "garbage" that takes care to take away from the nest box. Well, not as pretty as the petal, but he must also maintain the cleanliness and tits are champions in this field. The house is spotless and the chicks wait for the parents to deliver their little white bags.

.

..You can see them grow!

This one is already walking in the bowl of the nest. Yep, already six days for the former.
Black head, black wings and well-marked spine from which will grow the first feathers of the back.

It would be better in colour but now a dirty big spot appeared on the colour webcam pictures and just over the bowl of the nest (of course!). Probably a dark projection on the glass that protects the camera. It does not improve the pictures quality.

May 5th

Sun, some clouds but 5°C in the morning! And this same chilly northern wind.

.

Pin feathers begin to appear on his shoulders.

.

.

They cant still see but you begin to make out the eyes slit.

.

.
Grandgousiers!

.

Seven chicks, the last one has not survived.

.A spider for the end? The second main course is green caterpillar. He often hangs so at the nestbox entrance. And even there, he manages to flutter his wings to present the meal.

.

.

May 6th

Again, the north wind and 5°C this morning, but it is a little warmer in the afternoon (14 °C).

.Undeniable, the feathers grow.

.

.
Yum, yum, a little spider...

.

The eyes open.

.
The one with the large beak has its eyes open.

.

.

.One flapped its wings! Mom remakes bedding: green leaves (at right). A fresh new feather and a large batch of straw. And after... shake well all this.

.

All pink, one is still very small compared to others.
We see it at the end of the video.
At far right, next to the nest bowl, greenery...

Watch VIDEO   (5406ko, 3mn 36s)

May 7th

.
The wind subsided a bit.

Overcast. Always cold in the morning (6°C).

.

                    (Clématitie Multiblue)

.

Supertit!

.

Feedings begin at 6:20 in the morning.

.Two is not to much.

.

.
Routine!

.

.
The cross.

.

..

Envols.

.Last week it was sunny and hot, so it was nice to enjoy refreshments.

Right now it doesn't tempt any one.

.

May 8th

Always cold in the morning: 7°C - 15°C.

.The beaks poke out their mother's feathers.

  .

As temperatures definitively do not want to rise and insects become scarce, we distributed these days a few mealworms, until this the missing springtime comes back.

.They now have the appearance of little chicks. They are seated.

.

May 9th

A little warmer, 10°C this morning, but still cloudy, cool and showers. 16 °C.

.Beautiful set!
.

They chirp aloud, I hear them even with the window closed.

But there are only six this morning. Indeed in the photos yesterday, only 6 opened beaks where visible.

..

.

A drop of yellow on the chest.
And they itch all these feathers!

..
And the white feathers little crown of on the nape clearly visible.

(Hélas, bien centrée cette tache sur la vitre!)

..

.
The eyes open more and more with each feeding.

.

.

The oldest one has 11 days. Still 9 - 10 days and next week (about May 19-20) they'll come out to the big world! Yes, already (well, perhaps the parents don't share the same opinion...).

May 10th

Overcast, 12°C 14°C.

.Yellow feathers, small black mask around the wide open eyes.

.Small sharp beak of the tit but still surrounded by a large yellow moustache.
Some fresh new greenery to the nest.

Spiders and green caterpillars on the menu.

Parents are less present. They leave them alone in the afternoon, long time.

They still have ruffled feathers on the head. Only the back and belly are all pink. Some wave their wings frantically. They chirp merrily at the slightest sound, of parents of course, but also other sounds strong enough. I have to stay a long moment on the balcony, with parents who came and went to the birdhouse without much regard to my presence.

. ..

. ..

. ..

May 11th

Cloudy, 7 °, with a gray cover. Rain, northern wind. Ice Saints and autumn weather.

...

.And rain, very cold rain all day. Just 5°C tonight!
Parents come soaked in the box.

Mom accommodates the nest, the bowl was dug and I think that the chicks are totally on the bottom of the box. They sometimes find themselves under the soft blanket of the nest on which their mother is pulls with small pecks and we see the whole edge move. She spent a good part of the day brooding the new ones (at least she is also sheltered).

Watch VIDEO   (2974ko, 1mn 23)

(A little big for a video but they are funny those close-ups, for once!)

I hope that the small weather improvement expected next week will be there.

These images are in IR but they have enough colours (because of visible lighting) and the image is better allowing for larger sizes. I have indeed increased a little the lighting as the chicks are now bigger.

May 12th

Very cloudy, very cool 8 °C.

...

They already beat the wings. At least the one that I call super-tit, much more developed than the others. Always the first to eat. He leaves the bowl, fidgets, continuously disturbs everyone. The centre of the nest is well hollowed, there is an overhang under witch one or two chicks disappear sometimes. Some younger, still have their small stiff feathers on the head, just behind the racoon black mask. The more developed have lost them.

...

Soft yellow chest but they are all pink between the wings. Parents pass regularly to feed them.

. ..

And the others...

.
He came to take a nap on the balcony wrapped in its delicate pink feathers. Baby wood pigeon is brand new, out of the nest probably not long time ago.

.

.Still yellow on the beak for this young sparrow.

.

You can not resist to a little down. Well perhaps, because I do not know which holds the other one.

May 13th

May 12th: 20.30 and she's still out. The chicks sleep. She will not return before 9 pm.

Still gray, cool, 10°C, humid.

.True little tits.

.

.

.

Super-tit isn't.
