This
evening, at 20h30 two chicks left the bowl of the nest. This often happens in the
course of the day now that they are larger and normally they return quickly without
problems. This is not the case this evening. They try to regain the nest but
take the wrong direction and end found in a corner of the nest (at bottom right
in the photograph). We put a little lighting, anxious that they remain out of
the bowl of the nest. The mother brought beakfuls on several occasions but both
remain obstinately in their corner.
You would
say that there is a hole at this place. They try to go up the slope but it seems
that it is too stiff and they give up. Photo 21h02 on left and 21h19 on the
right. They are there, waiting, since 20mn. The mother returned and stirred up her
youngsters as usual. For the moment she does not deal with the 2. We lit a
little.
21h20 and always in the
corner. It is happy that they are two; at least this will allow them to keep a
little warm. Suddenly, the mother seems to see them. And this time she does not
ignore her two bandits and goes to see them, feeds them. On several occasions
she advances her beak, touch them. One starts to go up beside the mother.
One
succeeded to extract himself from the hole. It made a roundabout and has just
returned, it the one higher than his/her mother's back in the picture. The
other still hesitates. It is almost 21h30 and darkness grows. But his/her
mother is concerned and from time to time touches him with her beak. It seems
to encourage him. Finally it decides and goes up the slope. Everyone returned
under mom's feathers.

Another youngster is wedged in the same hollow. The mother attends him from time to time. He does not seem to be ill, because at each feeding one can see him open his large beak (with some difficulty because he is just out of the field of the camera, only the IR camera allows to see a small part of him). It is wedged under the edge of the nest. The mother stops to nourish him from time to time. There are now 3 hours that he is wedged. We decide to give a small helping hand. Just the time to open the nest box, to lift him and here he is, again on the nest, where he hurries to return within the others. It is warm in the nest. The chicks keep silent and nuzzle at the bottom of the nest as soon as the door is opened. They are difficult to see. The mother will return very quickly. Was it necessary to give the small help or not? It appeared so miserable trying to go up and falling down!

This night another chick did not survive. The one which we helped? Difficult to know. Is it for this reason that it remained in the hole? Another one, at the left of the photograph, is quite small.
11 May
Overcast.
(16-20°).
Early in
the morning (it is 7h), the mother withdraws the dead chick from the nest and
tries to take it out. It is already rather large and does not pass by the nest
box hole. She will try many times. She stops from time to time to go to seek a
meal and to nourish its brood.
It will
take her 3 hours to take it out. At 9h50 she succeeds finally, just before we
help her.
